Half-top Knothalf-top-knot

Use a heat-protective straightening product before blow drying and flat ironing to get hair as sleek and smooth as possible. Or if you crave waves loosely wrap your hair around a tapered wand iron. With a metal-tail comb, grab a section that runs from the arches of your eyebrows to the top of your head and pull it back into a ponytail, smoothing out any bumps along the way with the comb. Once you’ve made your ponytail, evenly distribute a strong-hold hairspray at the roots of this section to help hair lay flat and to tame any flyaways. Then create the bun by wrapping the ponytail around itself, secure with bobby pins, and finish the look with your hairspray. Want a less structured style? Don’t bother smoothing out the bumps when you pull back your half ponytail. Instead, gently pull pieces up-without pulling them out––and do the same after securing the bun. Add a bit of sea salt spray and scrunch to finish.

Mermaid Braid

Start with second or third day hair, or spray in L’Oréal’s Next Day Hair, work in some shine-free texturizer or sea-salt spray, and then braid to one side. Ladies with straight strands may want to add a bit of texture before braiding by curling hair with a 1-inch iron or wand. When finished, remove face framing pieces for a romantic look.

Crown Braided Updo

Prep your hair by blow-drying with Densité. Start this style by creating a French braid behind one of the ears and work across the top towards the other ear. Remember to always pull from the front of your hair, feeding the front hairline into the back as you braid. Add a touch of whimsy by adding flowers to your braid, or pull out some small pieces of hair just above the ears for a more relaxed feel. For special events, leave out face-framing layers and gently curl them away from the face with a curling wand or iron. Spray your curls with a light hold hairspray with memory hold like Infinium 3 or 4 once they cool.

Balayage, Ombré, Babylights?

Fashion magazines, Pinterest, the Red Carpet. There are many places that we look to for the latest and greatest trends. But so many different names! How can you tell which look goes with which style? What is the difference between all these different blonde techniques?

Balayage

loreal Loreal professional professionnel Mirante mix salon salon hair salon hair styling hair cuts men’s

A French word meaning to sweep or to paint, balayage is the technique of free-handing soft, painted lines to create streak-free, natural-looking highlights with less noticeable roots on the hair. These hand-painted highlights are strategically placed to look like your hair has been kissed by the sun. Balayage is customized for each person based on their hair length, hair texture, skin tone, and desired level of maintenance. As far as hair color treatments go, balayage is as low maintenance as they come.

Balayage is not just for blondes. Rich-toned caramel balayage is becoming a go-to for brunettes to enjoy the popular balayage hair painting technique. This color is perfect for dark haired girls who are looking to lighten things up with a sun-kissed glow.

Balayage isn’t just for girls with straight strands either. Curly girls can get in on the fun as well. While the process is a bit different, balayage for naturally curly hair is equally as gorgeous. The method is applied to each curl with a free-hand painting technique but instead of laying on top of the hair each strand must be thoroughly saturated. This ensures that the highlights look naturally sun-kissed, accentuate movement and definition, and grow out without an obvious line of demarcation.

Ombré

The term ombré comes from the French word meaning “to shade,” and describes the gradual blending of one color to another. In most cases the hair gets lighter from the mid-length through the ends. It looks beautiful on all hair lengths and textures and gives anyone an instant edge. Ombré has a pretty drastic and exciting difference in the haircolor from where it begins on the root to where it ends. While ombré was initially the gradual lightening of the hair from dark to light, it has expanded to take on various other color pairings, including the fading of a natural color from the roots to a brighter, fun color such as lavender, blue or turquoise (you pick the choices are endless!) at the tips.

Sombré

Like ombré, sombré creates a gradual transition from darker roots to lighter ends, but in a more subtle, blended way. This technique is a softer version of it’s edgier counterpart (Get it? Soft Ombré) and is a great way to test the waters if you’ve been eyeing ombré styles for awhile. Sombré creates more dimension by taking the darker hue found at the roots and subtly weaving it through the lengths of the hair to ultimately create less of an abrupt contrast from roots to ends. By retaining some of the darker root color throughout the ends your stylist can subtly break up the lighter solid ends. This techique is the ultimate in low maintence!

Color Melting

loreal Loreal professional professionnel Mirante mix salon salon hair salon hair styling hair cuts men’s

A color melt is a dimensional look that has a lived-in feel with brightness around the face and absolutely no hard lines of demarcation. The color literally melts in gradation from dark to light. If you’ve never highlighted your hair before it’s a great first step.  Color melting is very similar to ombré and sombré but with a more subtle shift and with less dimension into the lighter ends. One reason this look is so popular is its versatility. It can work on any haircolor. Whether you’re warm, cool, caramel, or copper, a color melt is a great way to add personalized dimension to your haircolor. If your skin tone is warm, look for warmer colors. If you are fair with pink undertones, your tones should have more coolness. But always remember, the cooler you go, it won’t feel as bright. So, if brightness if your goal, warm it up!

Babylights

loreal Loreal professional professionnel Mirante mix salon salon hair salon hair styling hair cuts men’s

Babylights is the process of adding a shimmer of delicate, natural-looking highlights similar to those that might have appeared after a summer basking in the sun as a child. The process involves micro-attention to precise hair highlighting, resulting in subtle highlights that are often brighter around the face, the crown, and at the bottom of the hair. Babylights tend to grow out naturally without leaving obvious or ugly roots behind. Application can vary from traditional highlights to balayage depending on client taste and maintence needs. This is great way to get your foot in the door if you are feeling overwhelmed by all the different hair color choices. Many start with a few highlights and then gradually add more with each subsequent appointment.

The Bob with Side-Swept Bangs

Blow dry with medium round brush and a heat protecting styling cream or spray for finer hair. Smooth strands with a flat iron for a classic, polished look. Brush bangs off to one side with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb and set firmly in place with a spritz of hairspray. For an undone, piecey look, work a matte texture paste (warming with your palms) and scrunching with fingertips as you move towards the mid-lengths.

Beach Waves

To start, brush out your locks with a wide-tooth comb. Use a clip to pin up your hair above the ear line, leaving the bottom section down. With a one or two inch curling wand, starting at the ear, wrap a one-inch section of hair away from the face, leaving a two-inch section of hair straight at the bottom (you’ll be holding onto the ends). As you make your way around your head curling one-inch sections at a time, alternate wrapping the sections toward and away from your face. When the bottom tier is complete, spray with an extra-hold hairspray. Next, let hair out of the clip, this time pinning up only your hair in the crown section of your head. Repeat, then spray again. When you get to the last layer, spray the roots of each section with a root-lifting spray before curling as normal. Once hair has cooled down (usually about 5 minutes) use your fingers to break up the curls, creating a piecey, undone look. Add a touch of sea-salt spray at the ends and finish with a firm-hold hairspray.

The Messy Chignon: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Bun

Mist a matte-finish texturizing spray into dry hair to create some messy volume. Then, pull your hair back into a ponytail, carefully choosing a spot that works best for your face shape (higher tends to be more dramatic while a lower chignon feels a bit more relaxed). Wrap the ponytail into a messy bun, pin in place, and pull out a few flyaways by rubbing the bun with the palm of your hand. Finish with a light-hold hairspray or texturizer.
